Bless you! You do and have done so much for me. I can't imagine what I'd have done without you. Especially your prayers, for the Lord has truly honored them. Thank you again so very much! Could I ask a favor? Could you message me with your address? I have it, but I want to make sure I wrote it down correctly so I can give it to the children as they want to thank you for their coloring books which they really, really loved!
Dispute Over Jesus’ Testimony
v.12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
And boy oh boy, is this not the truth! I have walked in darkness, and it is not a joy! The world is getting darker, and it is sad....but those of us who follow Lord Jesus Christ, are so blessed to have the light of life!
v.13 The Pharisees challenged him, “Here you are, appearing as your own witness; your testimony is not valid.”
My Lord had so much patience, because frankly, these guys are so tiresome, I would have turned them off a long time ago....lalalala I can't hear you, you are annoying, go away!
Which is why I am so glad Jesus is the Savior/God and not me!
He did care about these lost souls, but they are so self-righteous, so power hungry, most will not budge, but I think some did....so His great love, gave Him patience with this bunch.
14 Jesus answered, “Even if I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is valid, for I know where I came from and where I am going. But you have no idea where I come from or where I am going.
v.15 "You judge by human standards; I pass judgment on no one".
Yup human standards of self centeredness, pride, self-righteousness, power etc.
I certainly struggle even today with some of these ( maybe all from time to time) but I do not want them. I feel sorry for them, they were so deceived.
16 But if I do judge, my decisions are true, because I am not alone. I stand with the Father, who sent me.
17 In your own Law it is written that the testimony of two witnesses is true.
18 I am one who testifies for myself; my other witness is the Father, who sent me.”
v. 19 Then they asked him, “Where is your father?”
“You do not know me or my Father,” Jesus replied. “If you knew me, you would know my Father also.”
This shows just how deceived and blind they were...as I once was. The joyful thing for me is, He opened my eyes and ears, and heart and showed me the truth.
20 He spoke these words while teaching in the temple courts near the place where the offerings were put. Yet no one seized him, because his hour had not yet come.
I loved what you wrote! I laughed when you wrote "I would have turned them off a long time ago....lalalala I can't hear you, you are annoying, go away!" I got such a kick out of that. I guess because I too have wanted to do the same thing at times!
I feel the same way you do. I hate how deceived people are. I especially feel for the Jews because I know what's going to happen to them during the Tribulation and want so much for them to know Jesus now so they can escape that and then Hell forever. But I don't even know a single Jewish person and as far as I'm aware there are none in our area, so I can't warn any of them. Oh well, at least I can warn other people.
Dispute Over Who Jesus Is
21 Once more Jesus said to them, “I am going away, and you will look for me, and you will die in your sin. Where I go, you cannot come.”
v. 22 This made the Jews ask, “Will he kill himself? Is that why he says, ‘Where I go, you cannot come’?”
Sometimes I almost laugh ( but I do know how serious and sad this is)...but Lord Jesus had just said, THEY would die.....he gave no indication He was going to commit suicide?
He is talking about going to Heaven, and if they remain in their unbelief, they will not be able to go to Heaven....and they somehow get He is talking about suicide?
That is a stretch for sure...more than a stretch....
but it shows how blind all people are until the Lord opens their eyes to the truth. I was no different than they were....probably worse but I am so grateful, my Lord and God opened my eyes, to see and hear the truth.
v. 23 But he continued, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world".
This is another proof to me, that Lord Jesus made it clear that He was God.
v. 24 "I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am he, you will indeed die in your sins.”
The uplifting and joyful part of this exchange, is my Lord says....IF......what is the implied is....if you DO believe that Lord Jesus is the Messiah, the Savior, then you (I) will not die in your ( my) sins!
25 “Who are you?” they asked.
“Just what I have been telling you from the beginning,” Jesus replied.
26 “I have much to say in judgment of you. But he who sent me is trustworthy, and what I have heard from him I tell the world.”
27 They did not understand that he was telling them about his Father.
v.28 "So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me".
The greatest demonstration of love that will last for all eternity...Lord Jesus Christ died on the cross....in order to pay for the sins of all people who will trust in Him.
This is a love beyond compare...perhaps a person might die for another out of love, but no one can pay for eternity in Hell for millions of people...only Lord Jesus because He was, is, and always shall be God.
29 The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what pleases him.”
v.30 "Even as he spoke, many believed in him".
I also believe in Lord Jesus Christ, my lord and savior, my God.
True, they were being sarcastic most likely. (about verse 22 where they asked if He would kill Himself). The commentaries also suggest that because they believed that people who committed suicide went to what we would call Hell, that they were saying that they thought that's where Jesus should be. What you said about verse 28 was beautiful. I don't think I've ever heard that said any better by anyone. Let me share something about verse 24 that you might want to add to your bible... “I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am the one I claim to be, you will indeed die in your sins.”” (John 8:24) a better translation of this would be as some others have it: “Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.” (John 8:24) Although all the commentaries say the same, I'll quote from MacArthur's: I am He: The word “He” is not part of the original statement. Jesus’ words were not constructed normally but were influenced by OT Heb. usage. It is an absolute usage meaning “I AM” & has immense theological significance. The reference may be to both Ex 3:14 where the Lord declared His name as “I AM” & to Is 40–55 where the phrase “I am” occurs repeatedly (especially 43:10, 13, 25; 46:4; 48:12). In this, Jesus referred to Himself as the God (Yahweh—the Lord) of the OT, & directly claimed full deity for Himself, prompting the Jews’ question of v. 25. The MacArthur study Bible Here's just a few of them:
“Who has done this and carried it through, calling forth the generations from the beginning? I, the LORD—with the first of them and with the last—I am he.”” (Isaiah 41:4) ““I am the LORD; that is my name! I will not give my glory to another or my praise to idols.” (Isaiah 42:8) “For I am the LORD, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior; I give Egypt for your ransom, Cush and Seba in your stead.” (Isaiah 43:3) “I have revealed and saved and proclaimed— I, and not some foreign god among you. You are my witnesses,” declares the LORD, “that I am God. Yes, and from ancient days I am he. No one can deliver out of my hand. When I act, who can reverse it?”” (Isaiah 43:12–13) ““This is what the LORD says— Israel’s King and Redeemer, the LORD Almighty: I am the first and I am the last; apart from me there is no God.” (Isaiah 44:6) All through these chapters He frequently says “I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me.” (Isaiah 46:9) as He did here. “You have trusted in your wickedness and have said, ‘No one sees me.’ Your wisdom and knowledge mislead you when you say to yourself, ‘I am, and there is none besides me.’” (Isaiah 47:10) ““Come near me and listen to this: “From the first announcement I have not spoken in secret; at the time it happens, I am there.” And now the Sovereign LORD has sent me, with his Spirit. This is what the LORD says— your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: “I am the LORD your God, who teaches you what is best for you, who directs you in the way you should go.” (Isaiah 48:16–17) and many many more. Pretty cool huh? In your bible you might want to just put a note that says, "He actually said, 'I AM'", because I'm sure you'll remember why that's important lol.
Dispute Over Whose Children Jesus’ Opponents Are
31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.
v. 32 "Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
This verse is so uplifting to me, I just love it!
To know the truth.....and to be set free.....
Free of the dark realm of satan, free of depression, evil, my sins, sadness, hurts
free to have joy, peace and love of my Savior and God!
v. 33 "They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?”
I can't help but feel sorry for them....they are trapped in darkness, they can't see, or understand. They are supposed to be religious, spiritual etc. but they can only think of earthly things...
besides, even in just earthly things, ... the Jews were slaves, many times, so even on an earthly level only, their reply is disingenuous to some degree...maybe they personally were not slaves, but in any case, they are missing the whole point....
However, I feel so blessed that my Lord Jesus has helped my eyes and mind and heart and spirit to open to His glorious truth.
v.34 "Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin".
And so Lord Jesus has to explain to them what he meant....which is certainly THE truth!!
35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever.
v. 36 "So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed".
Another favorite verse :-) What a joy, to be set free, free indeed...truly free!!
v. 37 "I know that you are Abraham’s descendants. Yet you are looking for a way to kill me, because you have no room for my word".
another beautiful thing about Lord Jesus....He not only explained what He meant, he dealt with them where they were at...thinking their genealogy was what would save them
38 I am telling you what I have seen in the Father’s presence, and you are doing what you have heard from your father.”
39 “Abraham is our father,” they answered.
“If you were Abraham’s children,” said Jesus, “then you would do what Abraham did.
v. 40 "As it is, you are looking for a way to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham did not do such things".
My Lord tells them the truth about themselves....they were looking for a way to kill Him...but they would not confess and perhaps be saved...instead they lie like their father satan.
v.41 You are doing the works of your own father.”
“We are not illegitimate children,” they protested. “The only Father we have is God himself.”
Like satan they are filled with pride....do they really think God is fine with lies? I would rather be an illegitimate child and have the hope of being adopted by God...
v.42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I have come here from God. I have not come on my own; God sent me".
I love Jesus for all He has done for me, and because He loved me first....I pray I may love Him more and more.
v. 43 "Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say".
Instead of being depressed I can have joy that I can hear what Jesus said and am learning more and more daily!!
v.44 "You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies".
I surely went thru a time when this was me....and I still struggle with sin.....but I have been born again, and this is not how I am defined. I still find it hard to confess sometimes....and there are times when I may not....but the real me, the born again me, does not love lies, or anger, instead of an attitude like I had in the past, of anything but Jesus
I have turned completely around, and it is ONLY Lord Jesus I want!!! And that gives me joy!!
45 Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe me!
46 Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don’t you believe me?
v. 47 Whoever belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.”
This is also a joyful verse...when doubt tries to confuse me and bring me down...tries to tell me I am do not belong to Jesus.....this is one ( there are others) proof, that I do belong to Jesus.... because I do hear Him.
Wonderful! I want to point out one thing that may be helpful to you when speaking to others. This verse tells the truth about salvation: “To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.” (John 8:31) I prefer the versions that translate the last part as “If you continue in My word, then you are truly my disciples", or "If you abide in My Word". All the versions are right, but I think the words, "continue" or "abide" are better understood by people - they can't get away from the truth that it is continuing or abiding in His Word that proves we belong to Him. As one commentary puts it: Jesus addressed the “believers” & warned them that continuance in the Word—discipleship—was proof of true salvation. When we obey His Word, we grow in spiritual knowledge; & as we grow in spiritual knowledge, we grow in freedom from sin. Life leads to learning, & learning leads to liberty. Bible exposition commentary
I love how you described being free especially!
Amen! No, you are not a child of the devil because the record of your life has been changed since the instant you were saved. Since then that record states that you lived the life that Jesus lived and you are clothed or seen by God as having His righteousness. He doesn't see your sins, He sees the life of His Son. What most people don't want to believe, including some who say they are Christians, is that people who are not saved are children of Satan. Let me share how MacArthur explains it as he does a good job. The Bible is clear that all people are God’s creation (Col 1:16), & that God loves the entire world, but only those who are born again are children of God (John 1:12; 11:52; Rom 8:16; 1 John 3:1-10). In Scripture, the lost are never referred to as children of God. Eph 2:3 tells us that before we were saved we were “by nature objects of wrath.” Rom 9:8 says that “it's not the natural children who are God's children, but it is the children of the promise who are regarded as Abraham's offspring.” Instead of being born as God’s children, we're born in sin, which separates us from God & aligns us with Satan as God’s enemy (James 4:4; 1 John 3:8). Jesus said, “If God were your Father, you'd love me,” (John 8:42). Then a few verses later in John 8:44, Jesus told the Pharisees that they “belong to your father, the devil, & you want to carry out your father's desire.” The fact that those who aren't saved aren't children of God is also seen in 1 John 3:10. We become children of God when we are saved because we are adopted into God’s family through our relationship with Jesus. This can be clearly seen in verses like Rom 8:14-17. Those who are saved are children “of God through faith in Christ Jesus” (Gal 3:26) because God has “predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure & will” (Eph 1:5). When we’re born we belong to God, but when we become old enough to know right from wrong and our sins are counted against us, we become a child of Satan unless we make the conscious choice to remain a child of God. We do that by accepting the death of Jesus as payment in full for our sins and asking Him to be our savior. It’s how we’re born again as a child of God. (John 1:12) Failing to do that, we’re no longer “one of His own” and our assignment to Hell is considered by Him to be our own responsibility. Though He wishes that everyone would come to repentance, He respects that it’s our decision. (2 Peter 3:9;1 John 3:9-10; John 8:42-47) This is from one of MacArthur's sermons.
Your last words are also very true and good. They remind me of another verse that I know you know too. Whenever we are confused, we can instantly know that what we're thinking is not of or from God - that it's not true, because our God is not a God of confusion, but of peace! “For God is not a God of confusion but of peace. As in all the churches of the saints,” (1 Corinthians 14:33) Praise God! However, some people use this verse wrongly and assume that if they "feel peace" about something that it means that God is giving His "OK' for their plan or whatever it is. That's wrong because God never tells us to trust our feelings over His Word. So the only time someone can truthfully say that is when their plan (or whatever) is in agreement with God's Word and they feel "peace" about it. The same is true for us with what we're talking about. You know that God's Word says you are saved and safe in His Hands, that you are a child of God. Therefore when you feel confusion about this, you can know it's a lie and not from God because it's against His Word which causes your confusion.
You've done wonderfully! Thank you for sharing all of this with me. I really enjoyed reading about all you've written. It's certainly encouraging and edifying for me!
I hope you guys had a wonderful Christmas. I shared about ours in Christian chat so won't repeat it here. Love you!
